Raton…here we are!

We made it! We wound up leaving early – on Wed night, because the weather was forecasting freezing rain and snow for thurs night and fri. We made it about an hour into Arkansas on Wed, and yesterday drove 15 hours to arrive here at 11pm. Wed driving was not fun, as it was pouring rain, but yesterday was great – though overcast and gloomy, it as great for driving so we decided to push on through. Oklahoma City and the surrounding area was an ice palace – everything covered in a thick layer of shimmering ice. Really quite pretty. I am anxious to see what the terrain is like here – as we couldn’t see anything in the dark. Raton was all lit up with Christmas lights, and gave us a great welcome with its warmth and quaintness and several inches of snow on the ground. My new landlady also owns the El Portal Motel, so we spent the night there. It is a really neat old old motel. Walking into the lobby it is very Victorian, but our room is 100% western. It is decorated in a horse motif that can only be loved in the west, with antique furniture and quaint western decor like cowhorns and cowboy hats. To lend to the antiquity of the room, it even has an old radiator heater, which we couldn’t figure out how to turn down – but was okay, we were quite cozy last night. It is early morning here. Ugur is still sleeping and I am trying to let him sleep, as he did the majority of the driving yesterday. So, as is normal for me when traveling, I was up at 6am. Now I need coffee so I am off to find it!

  1. Glad to hear that you made it okay, and that you seem (so far) to like where you’re staying! I can’t imagine it being that cold, as here we are sending Lily to daycare in shorts. I hope all goes well!
    Love you!
